TRADITIONAL ARTS AND CULTURAL EXCHANGES: THE LESSON OF HAKA BY SHANAN GRAY
TAHITI, PAPEETE, CAPF (01/21/2020) - Presented by Matani KAINUKU to the director, teachers and students of the 'ori tahiti department of the traditional arts section of the Conservatory, Shanan GRAY, professor of Reo Maori at Gisborne ( Tairawiti, NZ), shared one of the treasures of its culture, the Haka.
Releasing an unusual power, this teacher particularly insisted on two points: the gestures of the dances - one for the vahine, one for the tane, and this specific movement of the fingers of the hands symbolizing Life - but also and above all, the pronunciation of chants, in line with the gestures, and an extreme need for concentration and vigor: "when it starts, your faces must bear this rage".
With Vaehakaiki Urima and the Tamahine, then Toanui Mahinui and the Tamaroa, the dancers' trainings of the Te Fare Upa Rau followed the advice of their one-day teacher, thereby enriching their own practice.
